What is black soap?

Black soap originated in West Africa. Families and communities in Ghana, Benin, Nigeria, and other countries made it with their own recipes and local ingredients for generations.

The common link between black soaps – and the reason for its dark color – is the use of plant ash. Local plants are dried and burned, and the resulting ash becomes the key ingredient. Tama Black Soap is made with cocoa pod ash, but others use tree bark, palm leaves, or other local plants.

This plant ash is then combined with water, oils, and other substances, such as exfoliants. Tama black soap uses Organic Unrefined Shea Butter, coconut oil, lavender oil, and other natural ingredients in combination with cocoa pod ash. Oils and fats allow the black soap to solidify into bars. Most commonly the oil chosen will be local to the area where the soap is made. Some black soaps incorporate shea oil.
